The Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) has launched Bhuvan. This is a satellite mapping tool which allows users to zoom into geographical locations in India, just like Google Earth. It provides high-resolution satellite images for viewing. It goes one step further providing weather information, administrative boundaries, drought map, population and others.
Initial reviews appearing online are bashing Bhuvan for its lack of readiness. Its called a beta version but its not even a pre-alpha. Its only available on IE6 and above and needs an 11MB plugin to be downloaded. The system hangs often while using the plugin. High resolution images are not available and the site is often down due to excessive hits.
I think ISRO should learn from this experience and shape this application based on user feedback and get a hosting server that can handle traffic!
Still a commendable effort from the young Indian scientists.
